A4S at COP28

The United Arab Emirates hosted the 28th UN Climate Change Conference of the Parties (COP28) in Dubai from 30 Nov to 12 Dec 2023. A4S brought the voice of the finance and accounting community to COP28 through a series of in-person and virtual events to:

  1. Build momentum for change
  2. Mobilize the finance and accounting community in the transition to net zero
  3. Raise awareness of the need for the net zero transition to work for nature and people

Termed “a critical moment for global transformative climate action”, the conference included the first ‘Global Stocktake’, a comprehensive assessment of progress since the adoption of the Paris Agreement.

COP28 also took place in the context of a continued disconnect between the trajectory that we need to be on to avoid dangerous climate change and our current pathway. A4S co-hosted several roundtables and workshops on topics including high-level transition planning, capacity building and nature to highlight the actions necessary to reverse this trend, specifically:

  • Ensuring that halting dangerous climate change and increasing resilience is incorporated into decisions being taken now.
  • Enacting credible and ambitious transition plans, that are essential to turn net zero commitments into concrete action.
  • Incorporating nature and social positive outcomes into the transition to net zero.
  • Including CFOs, accountants and investors as an integral part of the solution.

A4S championed the role of CFOs, accountants and investors at COP28. These teams are vital to addressing climate action given the role they can play in ensuring transition plans are robust, measurable and embedded into strategy, financing and decision making.
