An essential event for those who work in the field of sustainable development, this seminar will help delegates see the value of sustainable development in private, public and third sectors. It will also demonstrate how sustainable development can help with accessing public and private procurement opportunities.
Who will benefit
Anyone for whom sustainable development is part of their role, in private, public and third sectors as well as finance practitioners who advise small businesses. It will also be of benefit to those involved in small businesses who want to learn more about the difference which sustainable development can make to their businesses.
The seminar will be dedicated to SME engagement and the importance of sustainability in developing small businesses; it will focus on the following:
• why it is important for SMEs to engage with the sustainable development agenda
• sources of best advice regarding sustainable development for SMEs.
The event will consist of three presentations from our speakers, followed by an open Q&A session with the panel. Chair, Graham Edwards, will open the event and introduce the speakers, as well as coordinating the Q&A session.

Chair Graham Edwards will open the event and introduce the speakers, as well as coordinating the Q&A session.
Paul Turner, Community and Sustainable Business Director, Lloyds Banking Group
Paul Turner will demonstrate the benefits of a robust CSR policy and report on the training of managers across Lloyds’ corporate and commercial divisions so they are better able to support customers to make the transition to a low carbon economy.
Jeff Brown, Wales and West Sustainability Lead, PwC
Jeff Brown has particular experience in environmental/carbon reporting in the public and private sectors, and has recently published a piece on the Value of Accounting for Sustainability with a focus on the area of sustainable reporting. Jeff will consider some of the specific financial opportunities for organisations to embrace sustainability, with a particular focus on micro generation.
Rosie Sweetman, Deputy Director Business Development, Business in the Community Wales and Wayne Davies, Finance Director, Castle Leisure
Rosie Sweetman, assisted by Wayne Davies, will draw on examples from across the public and private sector to demonstrate the ‘value’ of being responsible from her experience working for Business in the Community (BitC). BitC is a membership organisation and charity that stands for responsible business practice. Responsible business is achieving commercial success in ways that honour ethical values and respect people, communities and the natural environment. In Wales they work with over 100 companies ranging from indigenous SMEs to large corporates with an operational presence in Wales.
EVENT: Public Sector Sustainability Reporting: Turning Principles into Practice

Sustainability reporting is fast becoming an essential part of organisational governance in the public sector in Wales. With the Welsh Government’s stated aim to commence integrated reporting, public sector organisations will be required to gather and present appropriate information relating to sustainability. The accountant has an essential part to play in this process.
This key event will hear from organisations which are already developing reporting frameworks and analyse some of the challenges for the finance function in gathering and presenting information. Representatives from the Assembly Government will also set out the challenge and its expectations.

RESOURCES: BRASS and ACCA Cymru/Wales launch SME guide to embedding sustainability

The ABC of CSR for Small and Medium-sized Enterprises has been developed by BRASS (the Centre for Business Relationships, Accountability, Sustainability and Society) at Cardiff University and ACCA Cymru/Wales (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants). The guide has been tailored specifically for SMEs in Wales who want to understand more about corporate social responsibility and embed it into their business practice.
